Cinderella is the film in question, written and directed by Kay Cannon, who also created Pitch Perfect. Pop star Camila Cabello portrays the titular part in what appears to be a fairly modern adaptation of the classic story.
Maybe it’s just us, but watching people dressed in vintage clothing singing catchy modern pop melodies instantly takes us to 2001. That was the year Heath Ledger (together with Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, and others) released A Knight’s Tale, a lighthearted mediaeval adventure picture with a contemporary score. What follows is far from that, but the mood is there, and we’re not complaining.

Some may be turned off by the inclusion of James Corden, who seems to be in every musical these days, but have a look at the rest of the cast. On September 3, Cinderella will be available exclusively on Amazon for a limited period. That may lead you to question why you’re only now becoming aware of this reference. That’s because Sony had planned for it to be released in theatres in 2021. Following all of the release date modifications due to covid-19, it was pushed back to the summer and then sold to Amazon, much as Paramount’s Coming 2 America and The Tomorrow War. As a result, the film’s release date has been set for September. A picture that looks to be aimed for a younger audience, on the other hand, feels right at home on streaming, where young people who become engrossed in this fantastic cosmos may watch it again and again.
