The multi-million dollar television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings will launch in September 2022, according to Amazon Studios. The first season of the streaming platform’s show has wrapped in New Zealand, and the first images from the set have been released.

In a statement, Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, said, “The journey begins September 2, 2022 with the launch of our original The Lord of the Rings series on Prime Video.”

Amazon is spending $465 million in the first installment of the series, according to New Zealand government authorities. The drama is set to air for five seasons, making it one of the most expensive television shows ever produced.

According to a press release, the first season will be available in over 240 countries, with new episodes airing weekly. The historical fantasy plot will unfold thousands of years before the events depicted in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
